CITY SEEKS TO REORGANIZE PIER…AGAIN

Disneyland opened in 1955, stealing many of the Pier’s patrons, reducing it to a hang-out, in City Hall’s view, for unsavory people – motorcycle gangs, beats and artists and writers who rented the rooms over the Carousel. The iconoclastic Walter Hopps staged “Action I,” the ground-breaking first exhibit of west coast abstract expressionism in the Carousel, but City Hall was unimpressed.

Neglected by the City, losing money, the Pier continued to deteriorate, and, in 1973, the Council voted to demolish it and replace it with an artificial island and convention center. But residents were outraged, put the question on the ballot, saved the pier and dumped the offending Council members

In 1982, when Santa Monicans for Renters Rights, won control of City Hall, one of their first acts was to create the Santa Monica Restoration Corp. (PRC). It appointed a board of directors and imported an Executive Director from New York. The restoration began with the Carousel, and a residents’ workshop on the future of the pier.
