...RACINE - The Belle City Senior Center is to shut down at the end of the year, with Friends of Seniors reporting it can no longer afford to run the city's only dedicated community center for senior citizens.
An endeavor that started with bake sales andĀ meetings in school auditoriums in the 1990s, and led to the opening of the Belle City Senior Center at 201 Goold St. in 2004, now appears headed for a final chapter.
Friends of Seniors was founded in 1996 to bring a senior center to Racine. But last month, its board voted to end senior center operations, said Dick Hinsman, board president.
"It is unfortunate ... the intent was to have this become the beginning of a countywide center," Hinsman said. "WeĀ don't have a standalone (senior) center."
A key issue for the Belle City Senior Center is the annual $20,000 rent owed to the city for the building, located near the Racine Zoo. The group has used the building for knitting classes, bingo parties, health screenings and more, at first paying $1 for rent in 2004, $5,000 in 2005, $10,000 in 2006 and $20,000 annually starting in 2007, said Friends of Seniors founder Peggy Clark.
