StopBadware , a non-profit organization, founded at Harvard University in 2006, helps stop badware: viruses, spyware, and any other software that fails to respect a user’s choice about how his or her computer or network connection is used. From the StopBadware website: “Badware is a threat to the open Internet, one of our greatest political, economic, and cultural shared resources. As an independent non-profit organization, our focus is singular: how to protect users effectively and responsibly from this threat.”

Facebook hat das auf Open Source spezialisierte Start-up Strobe übernommen. Es ist Hersteller von SproutCore, einem Framework von vorgefertigten JavaScript-Codes, die das Programmieren von Websites und Anwendungen erleichtern sollen. Unternehmensgründer Charles Jolley arbeitet seit Jahren an SproutCore - unter anderem eine Zeit lang für Apple, das die Software für seine MobileMe-Dienste nutze, bevor Jolley sein eigenes Unternehmen Strobe startete.
Einen Preis haben die Unternehmen nicht bekannt gegeben. Strobe will seine Dienste nach eigenen Angaben vorerst weiterführen - allerdings nur für derzeitige Nutzer und nur in der aktuellen Betaform. Sollte sich daran etwas ändern, informiert das Unternehmen seine Anwender per E-Mail. SproutCore bleibt jedoch als unabhängiges Projekt bestehen.
"Strobe wurde in dem Glauben gegründet, dass HTML 5 die Weise verändern kann, wie der durchschnittliche Mensch sein Handy nutzt - mit der Hilfe von Apps, die jederzeit, überall und auf jedem Gerät verfügbar sind", schreibt Gründer Charles Jolley in einem Blogeintrag . "Jetzt stoßen wir zu den talentierten Leuten von Facebook, um dabei zu helfen, innovative Mobilerlebnisse für dessen Nutzer rund um die Welt zu entwickeln."
Google's announcement was made at its 2010 developer conference, Google I/O, and Mike Shaver, then VP of engineering at Mozilla, appeared briefly on stage to herald Google's $120 million gift as a boon to those who support open standards.
